Matthew 21:23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?"
What authority does the LORD Jesus Christ have over your life? If He stepped up right now and asked you to go serve at the homeless shelter today instead of going shopping, would you do it? If He told you to go the church and pray rather than take that bike ride, would you do it? If He told you to give money to that person on the street corner rather than buy your coffee, would you do it? The questions are endless … the point is, what authority does Jesus have over your life?
As we prepare for the Lord’s Supper on Oct. 29, I personally believe this is the greatest struggle we will face. Who is in charge? Have you heard that old saying, “Who died and made you boss?” that is exactly what these religious folks were asking Jesus. They believe they were the authority – nobody told them what to do and nobody had greater authority than they. How dare Jesus come in and disrupt their lives – how dare He challenge their way of life – how dare He suggest that they are the sons of the devil – How dare He judge them ----doesn’t He know the Bible says “do not judge”?
Church, Jesus makes it very clear – “deny yourself, pick up your cross, and follow Me.” There is no mystery in those 3 commands.
