Amos 5:4-6 "For this is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: 'Seek me and live, (5) but don't seek Bethel. Don't go to Gilgal, and don't pass over to Beer-sheba. Because Gilgal will surely go into captivity, and Bethel will come to nothing. (6) Seek the LORD and live! Otherwise, he may break out like a fire in the house of Joseph and devour Bethel, and there will be no one to extinguish it.
What an awesome invitation the LORD gives to Israel, “Seek Me and live…”. If they had an appropriate view of God, there is no doubt in my mind they would be running to Him. The reason the prophet Amos is speaking to the people is the fact that they haven’t been seeking Him. They had turned to the idols of the lands in which they dwelt.
“Seek Me and live…” don’t seek anything or anyone else. Sounds simple enough. Until you get out into the world and find all the wonders in it. Each day brings new offerings from this world. And man do they smell good, taste good & feel good! And, this old world makes them relatively easy to seek …. And to get!
“Seek Me and live…” also implies that those who don’t will die. Verse 6 indicates there will be no way to avoid total destruction. That sounds harsh ….. harsh …. But true. The LORD offers the invite … He gives the warning .. He reveals His love, mercy and grace while at the same time, warning of His wrath.
IT’s too easy to focus just on the invite … but if we don’t understand the warning, we won’t take the invite seriously. If we don’t seek Him, we won’t find life in Him. Seek the LORD and live! Otherwise, you will see Him break out like a fire and that fire will destroy you and there will be no hope of extinguishing that fire.
